Sprawl-busters in the town of Carollton, Georgia — a state which is second only to Texas in the number of empty Wal-Marts (34) — filed this report about their new battle to fend off Wal-Mart: “The land in question is one mile from the present small Wal-Mart store and land developers have so much money sunk into the land they are ready to sell their mothers to get this deal to go through. Behind the scenes we are told it is “a done deal.” There is also a three lane parkway attached to the success of this deal. This parkway has been defeated once in early 2001, by senior citizens that were being severely impacted. This parkway is to open up landlocked property for 3 or 4 land owner/developers to sell 3 acre estates and outparcels to super Wal- Mart. The only thing left for us to do is citizen input to pressure the city officials to say no to Wal-Mart. The land has been annexed into city and zoned C-2. City officials are saying their hands are tied. We need to educate the people and get the project stopped quickly. We have petitions circulating, we had some publicity this past week-end in our newspapers, we have an attorney writing a letter to Wal-Mart’s real estate rep., Mike Driver, Wal Mart Real Estate 2001 SE 10th St., Bentonville, AR 72716. There is a watershed downstream from streams on this property, and a swamp, Buffalo Swamp, that is being looked at for preservation. Wal Mart Representive may not be aware of this. Possibly there are other sites nearby that are being looked at for preservation.”
