The City Council in Terre Haute, Indiana has said no to a Wal-Mart rezoning proposal — for now. This week City Hall was packed with Wal-Mart opponents who applauded the Council’s decision. The City Council voted 4-3 against the zoning change for the store — but two members of the Council were absent, and one councilman who voted in favor, changed his voted to against, which means he could ask for it to be reconsidered as soon as next month. Acording to the Associated Press, one Councilor who voted against the plan did so in order to allow the vote to come up again with his other two colleagues there. Wal-Mart has run into opposition elsewhere across the state. Last June a Wal-Mart supercenter was defeated in Greenwood, a suburb of Indianapolis. The company this month, however, detailed plans to build a similar at another nearby location. In the town of Fishers, Indiana, community opposition helped slam dunk a proposed Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market.
Terre Haute can expect Wal-Mart to push for a better outcome with the next City Council vote. Opponents may find themselves having to go to court to block this project. For more Indiana stories, search Newsflash by the state’s name.
