Critics Say Wal-Mart is Responsible for Deforestation in Acapulco

This week Sprawl-Busters received the following field report from Dr. Enrique Bonilla Rodriguez, the Founder and Coordinator of the National Front Against Walmart, based in Mexico:

“In the year 2005 Walmart Mexico, using its monehy, got through the authorization process to initiate an irregular settlement to build a shopping center near the international airport of Acapulco; in Acapulco Diamante, where it established a Walmart store, a Suburbia, a Sam??s Club, and a Vip??s.

For this purpose it demolished, swept away, thousands of trees. Deforestation.

We now are surprised because the whole area was flooded!.

Deforestation is a process caused by human action which destroys the forest surface, removes a group of trees, causes immense damage to the quality of the soil, has impact negative for the environment, and is also a contributing factor in climate change.

Trees also help perpetuate the hydrological cycle by returning the water vapor into the atmosphere. Having fewer trees means more amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere and greater speed and severity of climate change.

Climate change has as a consequence that the rains are more intense and the hurricanes of greater magnitude.

Climate change is a product of human activity (Walmart) and razing trees; affecting our environment immediately, and thus the way in which we all live. Global warming is unequivocal, unprecedented change.

I suggest someone try to shoot down a single tree outside his home: your detention will be done by the public prosecutor’s Office and the State monopoly, but when thousands and thousands of trees are cut, nothing happens.

Walmart gives rise to unfair world economies. At this time, the monopoly has 3,200 businesses operating at the national level in Mexico. How many thousands and thousands of trees have been knocked down to this date?

And where are the authorities?

The Government can not fight corruption, because corruption is the Government.”
