An “outpouring of letters” from residents against Home Depot has knocked a proposed Levittown project off the fast track. The company had hoped to go before the Board of Zoning Appeals sometime by early Occtober, but now the process has slowed down considerably. Home Depot now has to wait for the town’s Conservation and Waterways Department to conduct an environmental review, which will look at issues of noise, vibration, traffic, air quality, pesticides and herbicides, etc. If that Board finds there is an impact on the environment, then Home Depot will have to pay for an environmental impact report, anda submit it back to the Conservation and Waterways committee for review. There will ultimately be a public hearing before the Board of Zoning Appeals, and letters from citizens will be included as part of the town’s review. According to a report in the Levittown Tribune, Home Depot “did not count on the public outcry that the situation has raised. Now, because of this outcry, the report will take longer and it will be quite a while before the case reaches the board.” The proposed Home Depot is located next to the Island Trees elementary school, and a residential neighborhood.
Look up Hempstead, NY on the internet and send Town Councilwoman Linda Reed a short note urging the Council to oppose the Home Depot. Or send a letter to the editor against the project to the Levittown Tribune. Home Depot may be hoping that Levittown doesn’t find out about the 2 serious fires that took place at a Home Depot in Massachusetts and Arizona.
