Imagine being only 25 footsteps from a Super Kmart! Kmart has a battle going with citizens in its home state of Michigan. With headquarters in Troy, MI, Kmart has run into citizen hostility in the northwest area of Detroit. The Neighborhood Legal Defense Fund, which represents block clubs throughout northwest Detroit, has written to Kmart CEO Floyd Hall opposing the company’s plans to build a Super Kmart at in the Seven Mile and Meyers neighborhood. “It is inconceivable,” the NLDF wrote to Hall, “that anyone with an insightful business acumen would establish a business in a community that is so overwhelmingly opposed to such a destructive intrusion into its quiet, tranquil neighborhood…Kmart has been grossly misled into thinking that the community not only sanctions this project but welcomes it.” The NLDF claims that “crowds of people” were bussed into the Kmart hearing wearing Kmart hats–but that “none of these people live in this community, and many do not live in the city.” The NLDF has told Kmart that “we were given absolutely no voice in the planning or the decisions of this project to be placedin our front yards…it will only be 25 footsteps from our yard to Kmart’s.”
