Sprawl-Busters has received an account of citizen opposition to a Wal-Mart from Las Vegas, Nevada, where Wal-Mart has been playing a hot hand, and the local United Food and Commercial Workers has been fighting back. Here’s the latest report from Las Vegas: “A developer wants to put a “scaled down” version of a Wal-mart superstore within walking distance of our private, elegant community. We already have many Wal-Marts in the area and even though this parcel is zoned for retail-commercial, the traffic impact in and around our residential are would be devastating. This parcel is located right off the new 215 Beltway (15 acres). We already have a Wal-Mart Superstore not more than 4 miles away, and a Wal-Mart discount store 4 miles away! A Wal-Mart on every corner. The developer had promised us a supermarket (one of our local chains) but he states that they are dragging their feet, so Wal-Mart snatched it up! When the developer was approached with the thought that Wal-Mart was not allowed in Summerlin (another elegant master-planned community) he told us that is why we are getting it! It is not welcome! We need local stores and supermarkets (full service) with nice features to enhance our community. The developer can not understand why the homeowners are so against Wal-Mart and the whole “Wal-mart and there goes the neighborhood” idealogy. That’s because it isn’t going to be in his backyard!”
