Sprawl-Busters has received the following update report from residents in the town of Cortland, New York: “We have a very active citizens’ group, Citizens for Aquifer Protection and Employment (CAPE). We have been fighting efforts to build a Wal-mart Supercenter. The Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) has just been submitted and we are looking to find a traffic expert who can help us analyze Wal-mart’s plan and be able to provide expert testimony if we end up in court. Aside from all of the usual problems this Supercenter proposal will cause for our community, it would be located over a critical recharge area of our sole source aquifer, the source of drinking water for our entire county. Parking lot runoff from a commercial operation of that size could pose serious threats to water quality and create stormwater management problems. So, we have serious environmental concerns on top of the labor, community character, traffic and other issues.”
