Residents in Cortland, New York report that Wal-Mart is pulling out all the stops to expand their discount store into a supercenter. Here’s their update: “The Wal-Mart store in Cortland is attempting to expand into a dreaded supercenter. The current 93,000 sq. foot store has already helped contribute to the closing of Ames, and nearly toppled the local K-mart. Now they are trying to build a supercenter on protected city property. This property houses the only aquifer for all of the city’s drinking water. Wal-Mart has already been denied permission to build by the city board, but they are appealing and have started going door to door asking people to write letters in support of it. They also have set up a petition in the store asking for signatures in support of the proposed supercenter. When will these people stop? When you can see a wal-mart logo on the earth from space? This will surely put the nearby Price Chopper grocery store out of business, which has only been there for 3 years. I think if it wasn’t Wal-Mart that was out of control, it would be K-mart or Target, or whoever. But right now, Wal-mart MUST be stopped. They think they can bully the city of Cortland into letting them build their precious supercenter. It’s ludicrous. The city is only populated by 20,000 plus people. The current store does good business, but not nearly enough to merit building a supercenter.
