Late breaking news. A reader in Utah emailed me the following update from the Better-Late-Than-Never Department: “You may add Cedar Hills, Utah to your list of communities that have turned Wal-Mart away. A proposal for the construction of a Supercenter in our quiet suburban community of 5000 came to light in April 2003. Early indications were that the mayor and a majority of the City Council favored approving the proposal. We organized, did research, demonstrated (the public clamor element), lobbied the Planning Commission and City Council, surveyed the residents, distributed literature, enlisted the media, and obtained legal representation. As at least a partial result of our efforts, the proposal was denied by a unanimous vote of the City Council the following September. They indicated that they won’t be back.”
Always glad to add another town to the list of comunities that have denied Wal-Mart. Other readers who know about towns that beat big box retaile, pass the information along. For further information on this Utah case, contact [email protected]
