WUSA Channel 9 reports from Frederick, Maryland that a Wal-Mart superstore 5 years in the planning is now ???dead in the water.???

Wal-Mart has backed out, issuing this terse statement:
:
???As we evaluate opportunities to better serve our Maryland customers, we have made a business decision to no longer pursue the proposed store at the Frederick Towne Mall site. We greatly appreciate the support of the City and many residents during the planning of this project. The construction of our new Supercenter at Liberty Road and Monocacy Boulevard confirms our overall dedication to the City and region. We look forward to continuing to serve our customers in and around Frederick.???

The company clearly had promised on more stores for the trade area than it could support. The Wal-Mart was going to be the anchor store at the proposed development where a dead mall now sits???another victim of big box retailers.
One local shopper told WUSA that Wal-Mart comes in to ???rape the land and then move out. So this time, they didn’t come in. So good,???

Frederick has just dodged a bullet.
