How many Wal-Mart accountants does it take to sell a package of detergent?
The answer apparently is: 7,000 more than yesterday.
The Wall Street Journal broke the story this week that Wal-Mart is shifting 7,000 ???accounting and invoicing positions??? into direct sales positions at the retail store level.
This new sales force of accountants will have its work computerized instead. The WSJ says the jobs being eliminated make about $13 an hour, or $27,000 a year???a higher wage than retail clerks on the sales floor make. These back of the shop workers will have a choice of losing their job or moving into a sales position—jobs with totally different skill sets.
Wal-Mart admitted that these workers would see their salaries go up or down, which are really the only real possibilities.
These employees trained in accounting—who have no union to represent them– could find themselves stocking shelves or fulfilling grocery orders for store pick up,
???Right now I???m getting my resume together,??? one Wal-Mart accountant told the WSJ. In her current position, she makes around $15 an hour???after 21 years working at Wal-Mart. She told the newspaper she isn???t interested in working on a Wal-Mart sales floor.
This is what happens when their is no organized labor presence for the rank and file workers. No job security, just an invitation to find other work. And a salary of $15 an hour after 21 years.
