Wal-Mart’s Woes Put to Music.

Tony Vincent was a folksinger in Canada during the late 70s and early 80s. He came to Nashville, Tennessee in 1988 to see if he could become ‘financially’ successful at songwriting. He co-wrote ‘You Can’t Fly Like An Eagle’ which charted briefly for Johnny Lee. These days Tony lives with his wife in a small log cabin home outside the town of Fairview, Tennessee, working a day job, writing songs about his life, and playing guitar on his front porch, mostly. He says, “I wrote ‘That’s Wal-Mart’ because Wal-Mart is threatening my home (the tentative property is about five miles from our place), neighbors, and friends who own local businesses where I shop. And THAT’S WHAT I DO – write songs. I’m not a lawyer or environmental engineer, so I’m doing what I can.” Here’s the lyrics to Tony Vincent’s song, THAT’S WAL-MART. To hear the song, or to contact Tony Vincent, his email is listed at the end of the lyrics.

A FARMER JUST GOT RICH,
THE ONLY WAY A FARMER CAN
AFTER YEARS OF HARD WORK,
BY SELLING HIS LAND
HE TRIED LIKE HECK TO GIVE THAT MONEY BACK
WHEN HE FOUND HE WAS TOLD LIES,
NOT THE FACTS
THAT REAL ESTATE MAN WAS SNEAKIER THAN A FOX
NOT BUYING THAT LAND FOR HUNTING,
HE WAS BUYING FOR BIG BOX
KNOWING IT’S NOT WANTED, WAL-MART DIDN’T SHOW ITS FACE
IF I KNEW I WASN’T WANTED,
I WOULDN’T DARKEN THE PLACE
THAT’S WAL-MART!
— — — — — WAL-MART!
MAYBE BECAUSE THEY BURN DOWN ALL THE TREES
AND FOR A PARKING LOT,
PAVE OVER THE STREAMS
SURROUND EACH STORE WITH ACRES OF LIGHTS
HIDING THE STARS WE ENJOY OUT HERE AT NIGHT
LOTS OF NEW JOBS THAT’S WHAT THEY SAY
PRETTY MUCH ALL PART TIME WITH AWFUL LOW PAY
PEOPLE LOSING GOOD ONES FOR EACH ONE OF THOSE
WHEN FOR 20 MILES AROUND STORES START TO CLOSE
THAT’S WAL-MART!
— — — — — — WAL-MART!
INSTEAD OF MONEY MADE AND SPREAD LOCALLY AROUND
56 MILLION IS SHIPPED BY EACH WAL-MART OUT OF TOWN
MADE IN THE USA IS WHAT THEY ADVERTISE AND BRAG
YET, MOST THINGS HAVE FOREIGN COUNTRIES ON THEIR TAGS
THOUGHTS OF NEW TAX MONEY PUTS A GLEAM IN OFFICIALS’ EYES
BUT THINGS NEEDING TOWN SPENDING THEY DON’T REALIZE
MORE SEWAGE, MORE POWER, WIDER ROADS AND SUCH
AND WAL-MART WITH TAX EXPERTS DOESN’T PAY VERY MUCH
THAT’S WAL-MART!
— — — — — WAL-MART!
AND YOU KNOW A WAL-MART WON’T JUST STAND THERE BY ITSELF
ONE AFTER ANOTHER, THEY’LL KEEP BUILDING SOMETHING ELSE
WAL-MART WITH ITS MONEY, THINKS IT’S SURE TO GET ITS WAY
IT REALLY DOESN’T MATTER WHAT LOCAL PEOPLE WANT OR SAY
BUT, FROM GREENFIELD, MASSACHUSISTS TO CHANDLER, ARIZONA
EAST AURORA, NEW YORK TO INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA
AND A HUNDRED OTHER PLACES FOLKS ORGANIZED AND WON
SHOWING STOPPING WAL-MART CAN BE DONE
STOPPING WAL-MART CAN BE DONE!
THAT’S WAL-MART!
