Sprawl-Busters has learned that an activist group based in Mexico, the National Front Against Wal-Mart, has asked Mexican Attorney General Arely Gomez Gonzalez, ???to start an investigation for serious crimes practiced by the company Walmart in our country, which are known publicly by authorities in the United States.??? The National Front was founded by Dr. Enrique Bonilla Rodriguez. The bribery allegations stem back to 2005, but the National Front claims the Mexican government has done no investigation of the allegations.
According to the National Front, ???Walmart Stores pay for bribes in Mexico. Walmart Stores defrauded shareholders by concealing suspected bribes to help rapidly expand in Mexico, said a judge in the United States. On Tuesday 20 September , U.S. District Judge Susan Hickey in Fayetteville, Arkansas rejected the argument of Walmart Stores. Investors said that the company knew of bribes since 2005, seven years before The New York Times reported the allegations. The newspaper said then that senior executives , such as Mike Duke , ex-chief executive, covered up findings of an internal investigation and failed to alert the authorities of the United States or Mexico until the newspaper said it was investigating the matter.???
The group charges that no Mexican authority has ???initiated any investigation against Walmart bribery, money laundering, tax havens, tax evasion, and labor exploitation, which has been detected and published openly in the United States.???
The National Front adds:
???It is the obligation of our authorities to assume their responsibility and initiate research on the subject requesting information on what is published in the US, particularly the above representing several serious crimes.???
Cut out this article, and send it to your U.S. Senator. Ask your Senator to ask the U.S. Attorney General’s Office to publish its research into Wal-Mart’s actions in Mexico as possible violations under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
