Residents in the community of Hagerstown, Maryland already have one Wal-Mart supercenter, and are prepared to fight as often as necessary to keep a second one from their doors. Wal-Mart has already suffered defeat at a second location in this town, but like a bad penny, they keep turning up. Here’s a report Sprawl-Busters received this week from local Wal-Mart opponents: “An area of 157 acres zoned Highway Interchange near several nice developments recently has received a lot of action quietly by a local business property developer. A second Wal-Mart store/shopping mall has been beaten twice by local opinion. A group of us are going to attempt to defeat them again. They were defeated the previous times by zoning restrictions and could not get zoning changes/exceptions.”
Hagerstown already has a Wal-Mart superstore, store number 1674 on Garland Groh B. So the community does not need another one. For local contacts with citizens fighting Wal-Mart in Hagerstown, contact [email protected].
