FAMILY DOLLAR PAYS CLASS OF FEMALE STORE MANAGERS $45 MILLION IN EQUAL PAY SETTLEMENT

After a 15 year lawsuit, tens of thousands of female managers at Family Dollar are celebrating a sex discriminartion victory this week.

Family Dollar has agreed to pay 37,000 of its female employees a $45 million settlement to end a class action lawsuit charging that the retailer paid its female employees less than their male counterparts. The case was filed nearly 15 years ago.

The lawyers who brought the suit get one-third of the settlement, or $15 million.

The lawsuit, known as Luanna Scott, et al. v. Family Dollar Stores, Inc., was filed in the United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina. The woman said that Family Dollar discriminated against female managers by paying them less than they should have been paid as Store Managers in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Equal Pay Act.

The settlement covers workers from July 2, 2002 through November 14, 2017. The funds awarded will be used to make individual settlement payments to female Store Managers, and cover attorneys??? fees and costs. The lawyers will also $1,000,000 for litigating the case over 15 years, and for negotiating the settlement.

Family Dollar does not admit that the claims have merit. They are just buying their way out of the litigation
