Residents in the small town of Florissant, Missouri report that they have begun organizing to prevent a Wal-Mart from setting up shop on a large parcel of farmland. Here’s a report from Mark Behlmann, who says he is a residential builder and developer in the area: “Florissant is located in north St. Louis County. Currently we have a Wal-Mart in a neighboring municipality 4.5 miles south.THF Realty (the agent for Wal-Mart) is attempting to change 74 acres of residential farm land, the only peace left in our immediate area, to commercial for a development with the main anchor to be a Wal-Mart. This acreage is 4500 ft.off the main commercial strip which is Lindbergh Blvd. I have taken it upon my self to rally the neighbors/community to fight this change in zoning. On January 17th, we are holding a town hall public meeting. My committee and I are expecting a turn out of over 400 people. We have mailed out 600 letters with petitions to the community. I will also have press coverage. We will be preparing for the Planning and Zoning hearing on February 11th, where we are expecting to have over 500 people at that 1st hearing.
