A new report from the National Priorities Project and Jobs With Justice says that the typical clerk at a Wal-Mart would have to work 312 years to earn what Wal-Mart CEO David Glass earned in one year (1997). A Kmart clerk would have to work 423 years to match the 1997 pay of Kmart CEO Floyd Hall. “No family in America has made more money off the low-wage service sector than the Waltons of Wal-Mart fame,” says the report. “Wal-Mart kingpin Sam Walton died in 1992, but his widow and four progeny now sit on a fortune worth, at last count, over $55 billion. That sum makes the Waltons the second-wealthiest family in the United States, according to the Forbes 400 list.”
