In many communities across the country, citizens who already have one Wal-Mart store are saying that one Wal-Mart is one more than enough. Another community in Iowa is not pleased by the prospect of a Wal-Mart supercenter. This report from citizens in Maquoketa, Iowa arrived this week: “We already have a ‘small’ Wal-Mart here in Maquoketa, but I just read in the Dubuque Telegraph Herald 2/18/05 that Wal-Mart wants to build a giant superstore. The newspaper arcticle actually said “The supercenter would bolster Maquoketa’s position as a discounter town. The community of 6,100 boasts a Family Dollar, a Dollar General and a Super One Dollar Store and is home to a Family Dollar distribution center.” You and I both know that these businesses will not survive a Wal-Mart invasion. I have boycotted Wal-Mart for years now, and have been reading about their atrocious habits, now the fight has come here…We’re just starting out here in Maquoketa.”
