Sprawl-busters in Long Grove, Illinois have decided there’s more to life than a cheap pair of underwear. A citizen’s group called Long Grove Citizens for Smart Growth has formed to fend off plans for a mall that could include a Wal-Mart, and what residents call the “mall-i-zation” of Long Grove. The owner of the land Wal-Mart wants says that residents have to accept change, “just like everybody else does.” The corner lot slated for development is at Old McHenry Road and Highway 22. “This corner represents the onslaught that’s coming,” one activist told the Chicago Tribune. “If we don’t take a stand now, it could be the last domino to fall before we lose this jewel.” Long Grove is a community of roughly 4,000 residents.
