Residents in Three Rivers, Michigan are on high alert, now that a Wal-Mart superstore proposal has surfaced in their midst. Here’s a report from the front lines: “There have been unfounded rumors for a long time, but the story hit the papers just two days ago: Wal-Mart is in negotiations with an adjoining township to put up a superstore on a through-highway that already suffers from a vacant K-Mart, a vacant grocery store and a sprawling Meijer store (and soon, a Home Depot). The highway runs parallel to Main Street, which boasts a cluster of historic downtown buildings. Many downtown buildings are currently empty, but there’s a strong citizen’s movement ready to keep Three Rivers directed along its current upswing, whether Wal-Mart comes to town or not. We’ve organized an e-mail list (http://www.worldfare.org) and we’re holding a meeting for concerned citizens on Monday, September 27 at 5:30.
