A group in Toronto, Canada, called the Davenport-Shaw Resident’s Association (DSRA) has written to all the Mayoral candidates in the city, outlining a 10 point plan for rebuilding Toronto. The group, which formed in February of 2001, charges that City Hall has an anti-neighborhood bias, and “seems to think that it can do whatever it wants and the residents will lay down. They are in for a surprise.” The 10th issue raised in the DSRA’s plan is as follows: “Heritage Buildings, Architectural Design and Urban Planning: Create effective and enforceable legislation to: (a) protect Toronto heritage buildings from further destruction; (b) improve the structural quality and architectural design of new buildings; (c) ensure strict adherence to the City of Toronto’s Official Plan; (d) restrict the size and location of box-malls and drive-throughs; (e) revitalize main thoroughfares by encouraging new mixed-use higher density development; and (f) protect existing natural green space and ravines, create more parkland and public spaces and clean-up, improve and maintain existing parks and public spaces.
