Residents in the Salt Lake City, Utah area report that 130 people showed up this week at a local library to hear Wal-Mart explain the benefit of the new mega super store proposed for 6200 South and 5600 West in the West Valley City area, just three miles to the south of a new one and 2 miles to the west of yet another new one. Kearns and West Valley City are suburbs of west side Salt Lake City. Here’s the local report sent to Sprawl-Busters: “Wal-mart is opening 11 Neighborhood Grocers stores in the valley this year. Kearns is in unincorporated Salt Lake County, where a neighboring city (West Valley City) held a meeting with Wal-Mart. where the company told the residents how great Wal-Mart will be for us. They are planning a 60-acre Super Wal-Mart site on its border with us. Wal-Mart has already purchased the 60-acres. West Valley City is having the plan presented
to the Planning Commission on Wednesday, January 15, 2003. There are primarily 2 roads that would “feed” this site and both are two lane roads. One, 6200 South, has a level of service of ‘E’, which in Utah means it fails as a road (>19,000 vehicles per day.) The other is 5600 West, also a two lane road. West Valley City is also building a 17,000 seat outdoor amphitheater 1 mile due north of the proposed Wal-Mart site. Wal-Mart opened a Super Center in West Valley City on 5600 West and 3200 South in October (less than 3 miles due north of the proposed location.) Wal-Mart also opened a Super Center in West Jordan City at about 7800 South and 4000 West (2 miles due east of the proposed location) this past summer. I live in Kearns and I am comfortable driving the 2 miles if I ever needed anything at Wal-mart…which I don’t.”
