The scenic coastal town of Damariscotta, Maine is really too picturesque for a Wal-Mart supercenter, but nobody in Bentonville seems to know that yet, as the company tries to push stores further and further north up Route 1. For months, residents in Damariscotta have been digging for the truth about future development plans in their small community, without much help from local officials. This update from the coast of Maine came in this week: “Town officials acknowledge that Wal-Mart is planning to come to this tiny town, population 2400, on the Maine coast, but no one will officially confirm this. We are fighting for a size cap on retail development, and hoping to get it on the books BEFORE the building permits are submitted. We have a lovely, vibrant downtown, and this would be a death-knell.”
