A multi-year battle against Wal-Mart has been going on in Manor Township, Pennsylvania. Here’s a front line report from sprawl-busters in Manor: “Wal-Mart has been trying to build a SuperCenter Big Box Store between two residential communities in Manor Township since 1997. Our citizens action group, Friends Against Irresponsible Development (FAID), has been successful in thwarting their plans. We caused their initial application to be acceptable only with several very constraining conditions. We then successfully changed the zoning on the parcel they wanted by requiring a Special Exception for any store over 100,000 square feet in size to be built there. Recently, after spending several months presenting their case before the Manor Township Zoning Hearing Board for a new, Special Exception application, we presented counter arguments that caused the Zoning Hearing Board to deny their Special Exception application (on June 27, 2002).”
