A sprawl-buster correspondent in Hood River, Oregon writes that Wal-Mart is trying to hoodwink her Oregon community into replacing the existing Wal-Mart with a larger, supercenter. Here’s her letter: “I live in Hood River, Oregon where we already have an existing Wal Mart (72,000 sq. ft). Wal Mart has been making noises about a Super Wal Mart that would be located in the Urban Growth Boundary and last week sent a pre-application to the County of Hood River for 187,000 sq. foot building. Our population is 4,500 in the City of Hood River and about 22,000 in the County. The City Council and City Planning commission adopted a 50,000 sq.foot “footprint ordinance” which has been sent to the County to adopt. The county is saying off the record that they will not adopt it. We are having out first grass roots meeting Tuesday morning to start planning on how we can fight back.
One Wal-Mart for Hood River is one more than enough! Activists in Oregon who would like to prevent Wal-Mart from pulling the hood over the eyes of county officials, contact [email protected] to find out how to contact local residents who are preparing to do battle with Wal-Mart.
