Local activists in historic New Orleans, a city which is a treasure trove of urban history and culture, are gearing up for the latest Battle of New Orleans. This time the invasion is not by the British, but by the Walmartians. According to activist Geoff Coats, “Wal-Mart recently announced a project to locate a 200,000 sq.ft. super Wal-Mart in the Historic urban core of New Orelans. The project is to be on Tchoupitoulas St. The company is requesting demolition of the last remaining Cotton Press Complex in the city, to be replaced with a 900 car parking lot. The Cotton Press was built in 1882 and covers an entire city square.” Coats says a Wal-Mart will threaten the unique urban environment of the area, and continue the process of destroying the built environment of New Orleans one sprawl project at a time.
