According to the Federal Elections Commission, The Political Action Committee (PAC) formed by Wal-Mart stores donated $135,750 in the 1997-98 politican season, with more than 9 out of 10 of its contributions going to Republicans. Wal-Mart dribbled out its support mostly in $1,000 or $1,500 contributions, but a few chosen lawmakers, such as Senator Chris Bond (R-MO) received $8,500. Wal-Mart spending on Democrats totalled less than $10,000. Wal-Mart’s PAC gave money to 62 House members, and 16 Senators. Among House members to receive the support of Wal-Mart, were Reps. Tom DeLay and Newt Gingrich. Wal-Mart gave Republican Congressmen 15 times what they gave the Democrats. The only Democrats to get Wal-Mart PAC money were Reps Marion Berry (AR), Jerry Cooper (TN), Mike McIntyre (NC), Linwood Mercer (NC), and Charles Stenholm (TX). Wal-Mart gave money to Senate candidates in Alabama, Maryland, and Arkansas.
This $135,750 only represents what the Wal-Mart PAC gave to candidates. It does not include what individual members of the Walton family gave to politicians.
